Review

In the Republic of Gilead, founded on land that was once America, women may not read, work or even keep their own names. Offred is one of the women assigned as a "handmaid" to bear a child for an elite family.

Offred's fragmented narrative moves between her present and the old life in which she lost her daughter and her husband. Memory is both a refuge and a form of resistance for her.

Atwood depicts power's control over bodies and language with chilling realism.
