Review

On the night a famous actor dies on stage in Toronto, a deadly flu begins to spread. Twenty years later, the Traveling Symphony roams the Great Lakes region, performing Shakespeare and music for the scattered survivors.

Mandel jumps between timelines and characters, linking them through a rare comic book and a menacing prophet. The structure is delicate and the prose calm, and the book is less about the apocalypse than about what is worth preserving afterward.

The slow pace may disappoint readers looking for action, but the quiet beauty, summed up in the troupe's motto "survival is insufficient," is the reason it lingers.
